The Janome 7330 Magnolia is one of the least finicky machines for beginners (so say other users!).
It is the top of the line in the series and as I read over the features and functionality, I knew I’d just seen nearly identical performance in another machine review – the Janome AQS 2009.
Both machines are great for quilters, beginner or experienced, but whereas the AQS was built for portability, this one is a full size sewing machine.

Last year, the Janome AQS 2009 computerized sewing machine was released to help celebrate the American Quilter’s Society’s twenty-fifth anniversary.
This compact machine includes a selection of features geared towards quilting.
Little things like blanket stitches, a drop feed dog lever, a start/stop button and the ability to have the needle stop in either the up or down position as you decide all add up to a more controlled sewing experience.

The sturdy, mechanical Janome Magnolia 7318 is one model in a line of affordable machines for beginners that deliver the same state of the art technology and precision that has earned Janome such a solid reputation from its more expensive products.
It’s also known for smooth stitching and ease of use. It’s still portable but heavy enough to stand up to the bulk of thick fabrics and quilting layers. The aluminum cast body stays rigidly in place while you sew and the good sized work space allow your hands to freely work around the machine arm.

Sewers love the quality of Janome machines and the Janome Sewist 500 does not disappoint.
It is a nice, sturdy machine that runs quietly, includes the kind of automation that helps you set up the machine quickly, and can do everything from mending to quilting, including free motion embroidery.
There aren’t as many decorative stitches as some of the less expensive machines but what you get in exchange is a worthy trade-off.

The Singer 7467 Confidence sewing machine is more advanced than most beginners may need at first but if you already know you’re going to get into more complex projects down the road, the features, automation and flexibility that come with this sewing machine are pretty intriguing and it’s still reasonably priced.
While most of the settings are automated, they are also adjustable as needed. Think of it as a sewing machine with training wheels.

The Brother XL 3510 sewing machine follows the design of the other XL models, with easy to navigate dial controls, knobs and a large reverse button up front.
Compared to its “brothers” (pun intended) in the same line, it’s the second best choice for beginner quilters because of the nice decorative stitch selection.
Geared towards garment construction, as well, this one is very easy to operate and well liked by consumers.

Even the Brother website is confused about the XL-2230 Free-Arm sewing machine, stating on the same page that it has 11 built in stitches and then 15 built in stitches.
Frankly, this is a very basic sewing machine that has been overpriced. Their website also states : “The Free Arm design of this sewing machine is a key feature.” I think that says a lot. If free-arm sewing is about all you have to emphasize, there’s not much else going on.
